I know, I have an education. It’s seems a little like a waste doing the jobs that I do. But when I worked for Ashcircle, and when I worked as Exsulis I really wasn’t working in any field my education is technically applied to. And it seems as though I should have more drive in my life than to be happy doing servile work in low end industry for Alberta minimum wage ( but I still get more an hour than most people who work in the rest of Canada, there is a workers shortage here in Alberta, and the starting wage is decent ) .
But
The jobs were gotten quickly and easily. And though I don’t get challenged at work to rise above or learn new things, I do like the people I meet and work with. My stress level is low, my pay is regular. Fairly often I receive compliments from the people I give service to, and from my bosses. I take a certain pride in any jobs. Often I see people doing jobs with a scowl or offering service in a grumpy way. I don’t do that. When I am pumping gas I am polite and cheerful, I help when I can and people rely on that. Its not rocket science but there are people who return to the station just because I am good at what I do.
At the bar I try to be as curteous as possible, to be polite and to make people feel welcome and to a certain extent safe. I am physically able to ensure people leave when that time has come and to stave off conflict before it starts. The first night I bounced at the bar there were 5 fights… now there are few, and those that start end quite quickly.
A patron at the bar walked up to me a week ago and said “you have quite a reputation y’know?” I just looked at him. So he continued, “you see that group of people by the shooter bar?”, I nodded, “they were going to start something with the guys by the pool table, but one of their friends said not to because the fat bouncer would tear their heads off.”
That made me smile, because aside from dragging a few people out, and carrying a few others I have never done anything particularly physical. There has been no need, a few words, a few laughs. And the situation is clear. And if I say “I think it’s time to leave” then people leave. Often with a handshake and a “have a good night.”
I do like what I do, it’s easy to take pride in my work because it is simple. I have time to think about anything I want to. And in the end of the day I still have time to read, write, relax, cook a meal.
Do what makes you happy eh?
As an aside:
I’m glad I started a blog again, it gives me a place to share my thoughts. I don’t know if anyone reads it but I think some do. Thanks for sharing my life.
